What is a Pre Finished Internal Door?

A fully finished internal door, also known as a prefinished door, is a door that comes to your home ready-finished from the factory. Fully finished doors are available in a huge variety of styles, and sizes. They can be made from a range of materials including oak, walnut and pine. Construction styles are also various, with solid, semi-solid or hollow core, depending on the desired weight of your doors.

Do Fully Finished Doors Need Painting?

No, that's the beauty of fully finished internal doors. Because the wood is finished at the factory, it is protected from the elements and any bumps and scrapes that may befall your door while in transit. So by the time they arrive at your home, they are ready to hang.

The only thing you may need to do is trim your internal doors to size slightly (more on that later).

Can fully finished doors be painted later?

Yes. If you later decide that you would like to prime and paint your internal doors, the finish can be removed. Go over your doors with 120 grit sandpaper and wipe down with soapy water and the door will be ready to prime and paint.

This is one of the great benefits of a pre finished door. Even if your tastes or the décor of your room change, they can still be transformed in just a few hours.

What is the Difference Between Unfinished & Prefinished Doors?

At first glance, unfinished doors may not look so different from their fully finished counterparts. But unfinished doors will require a little extra work on your part before they're ready to hang. Unfinished doors are designed to give you a greater choice of finishes. You can apply a wood stain, oil, wax or paint to achieve your desired look.

But because the wood is untreated, it is vulnerable to damage and moisture ingress. Unfinished doors need to be finished or primed prior to hanging to protect the wood and ensure that your 10 year guarantee remains valid.

What about white-primed doors?

White primed doors are slightly different. These are treated with a coat of primer at the factory. These are more resilient than hand-primed doors. Nonetheless, we don't recommend hanging them without applying at least two coats of topcoat first.

We stock fully finished interior doors in a wide range of sizes. Nonetheless, there may be some customers who need to trim their doors to size slightly to ensure a perfectly flush fit. This can be achieved with prefinished doors, within the constraints of the construction of the door. Our internal doors have generous lipping to enable easy trimming. However, any exposed wood may need to be finished after trimming to ensure a consistently good look and protect the wood fully.
